Legal status of MDMA therapy in the Netherlands

MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine) is currently classified as a List 1 hard drug under the Dutch Opium Act. This should mean that it is more harmful to health than the soft drugs on Schedule 2. Because of this classification, MDMA is illegal to possess. Due to the legislation, it is therefore easy to use the therapeutic benefits of marijuana in a legal way MDMA therapy.

Research on MDMA therapy

At the moment there are more than 110 scientific studies on the effects of MDMA treatment on PTSD, trauma and anxiety. This is of course not without reason, since the previous studies showed good results.

MDMA therapy will become legal again in the Netherlands

Due to the many positively completed studies on MDMA and psilocybin, we expect that in 2025 psilocybin therapy will become legal again and soon after that also MDMA therapy. The estimate for legalizing MDMA sessions is now 2026.

Alternatives to MDMA therapy

Here in the Netherlands we can legally offer psilocybin therapy by not using the pure substance psilocybin, but the psilocybin-containing magic truffles. Psilocybin and MDMA do differ in effect, with MDMA mainly changing mood and openness, psilocybin also gives hallucinations. Those extra hallucinations can be used or judged as a disadvantage and an advantage.
