Trip therapy: remedying burnout with a truffle ceremony

Remedying burnout with a truffle ceremony
We recently helped a client from The Hague to overcome a burnout. We have played a role here in advising on nutrition, supplements, exercise, etc. To conclude, we have a private truffle ceremony organized.

Burnout is often caused by fear

Burnout is often the result of adrenal exhaustion in combination with other adverse effects of long-term stress. The stress can be caused by something in the work environment and/or in the private sphere. Often it is a combination of factors that causes stress. Stress in this case is another word for anxiety.

Adrenal Fatigue

The adrenal glands are small organs that lie like caps on the kidneys, with a layer of fatty tissue between them. The adrenal glands have an important job: their job is to deal with difficult, stressful situations.

Several hormones are produced in the adrenal glands, including:

  • DHEA: The hormone that makes you happy and allows you to recover from exciting events.
  • Cortisol: encourages you to take action by releasing energy from, for example, muscle mass.

Together, these two hormones provide a fight or flight response to fearful situations.

The adrenal glands play an important role in:

  • Regulating the “fight or flight” stress response
  • Regulate your blood sugar
  • Fighting disease and inflammation
  • Regulating balance between water and salt in your body
  • Production of androgens and estrogens

What is Adrenal Fatigue?

Adrenal exhaustion occurs because too much cortisol has to be released for a long time as a result of: stress, anger, fear, etc. Adrenal exhaustion occurs because stress is constantly present.

Stress is meant to be able to react quickly in intense situations. Back to the days of the cavemen: the only concern you had was not to be torn apart by a scary beast, or starve to death. There wasn't much left in those days, so you had to pay attention all the time

Nowadays you have your family, work, targets, telephones, email, the traffic jam, etc etc, so you have to be constantly in a state of readiness to be able to react quickly if necessary.

What are the consequences of this adrenal fatigue?

The long-term consequences are that you can get a burnout, become overworked, but your exhaustion complaints will also increase. You don't get around to anything anymore and you feel chronically tired. The body has difficulty releasing energy and because of the inflammation in the body, the positive hormones such as serotonin and dopamine drop.

What Causes Adrenal Fatigue?

Stress, anxiety and anger can exhaust the adrenal glands. The desired production of cortisol is so high that the body can no longer manage it at a certain point. The demand is greater than the adrenal glands can produce. Some people have so much tension in their lives for a long time that they develop health problems. Stress can be caused by many different factors. A characteristic may be that you are faced with an impossible task for which you do not see a solution or that there is a fear hidden in the subconscious. This creates tension and if that takes too long, your body reacts to it. Prolonged tension, and with it the production of cortisol, is the culprit when it comes to exhaustion of the adrenal glands.
