MDMA therapy possible in the Netherlands
MDMA therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which the client is guided under the influence of MDMA (a stimulant and empathogenic substance) to process traumas or other psychological problems. MDMA therapy is currently illegal in the Netherlands, because MDMA is on List 1 of the Opium Act as a hard drug. MDMA therapy is currently being investigated in several scientific studies on its effects on trauma and PTSD. It is expected that MDMA therapy will become legal in the Netherlands in the future, if the results of these studies are positive.
However, there are opportunities to legally use the therapeutic benefits of MDMA therapy. One is to use an MDMA analogue, a substance related to MDMA but not covered by the Opium Act. Since 2022, some therapists work with a legal MDMA analog which works even better than MDMA itself. Another possibility is to do psilocybin therapy, where the client uses magic truffles that contain psilocybin, a substance that also has a positive effect on mood and openness. Psilocybin therapy is legal in the Netherlands, because magic truffles are not on the Opium Act.
