Trip therapy: Movie suggestions before psychedelic sessions

The preparation of trip therapy

In addition to advice for improving neurochemistry (supplements, nutrition and exercise), we also provide reading and viewing tips. By taking in certain information, certain ideas arise. These ideas are like seeds that can sprout into an insight during a psychedelic session. Watching certain movies can therefore have a strong effect on the outcome of a psychedelic trip.

My Octopus Teacher

A movie that we like to share with everyone, even if you're not going to do a psychedelic session, is the documentary 'My Octopus Teacher'. What messages can you take from this film that could be useful in psychedelic therapy?

Other viewing suggestions

We have previously made an overview of Netflix films that are about psychedelics. Here is a summary of these other suggestions.

Heal

Heal is not about psychedelics, but about the self-healing effect that our body has. The self-healing effect can become active when stress and anxiety are reduced and psychedelics can help with that. Psychedelics often work better than any of the alternative methods mentioned. Despite the fact that psychedelics are not mentioned, Heal is still interesting to watch.

The Last Shaman

Prevent depression and suicide by doing an ayahuasca ceremony with a lot of preparation in the jungle. Ayahuasca is not legal in the Netherlands, but it can be compared to a high dose of psilocybin (truffles). This film is a great example of how psychedelics can save lives.

The Goop Lab

The rest of Goop Lab contains a lot of nonsense and should be taken with a grain of salt, but during episode 1 we see something interesting. During Episode 1 of Season 1 of Goop Lab with Gwyneth Paltrow, we see part of a magic mushroom healing. Although every ceremony looks different and we are not such a fan of the ceremony shown, the episode does indicate the healing powers of psilocybin (magic mushrooms) during a therapeutic setting.

The Sunshine Makers

The Sunshine Makers is about the psychedelic LSD. It is not so much about the healing powers of LSD, but more about the history of LSD and the counter-movement in the 1960s.

The Mind Explained

We think The Mind Explained on Netflix is the best preparation and the most informative series when it comes to the functioning of the brain and psychedelics. Season 1 contains 5 episodes and they are all worth watching! From how memory works and why we dream, you move on to which parts of the brain cause stress and anxiety. After those first 3 episodes, you will learn how to activate the self-healing capacity of the body with mindfulness and psychedelics. If you don't have much time to spare… forget the earlier tips and just watch The Mind Explained!

Have a Good Trip: Adventures in Psychedelics

Although several psychedelic stories are told by (semi-) celebrities, this documentary is mainly about LSD and psilocybin containing mushrooms. LSD predominates. It is not so much an educational documentary, although the ending of the film had an educational value. This documentary is mainly intended to be entertaining and that is what this one is.
